AUTHENTICATION POLICY

What a PAR authentication means.

This page structures the public rules for creating and interpreting a PAR authentication event.

Publication framework: this page is structured for PAR and should receive final legal/compliance review before public release.

Scope

Which objects, identities, communications, products or events may be authenticated.

Authentication event

The action that creates the PAR reference and records the relevant evidentiary metadata.

Actor and authority

How the person or organization performing the action is represented and, where relevant, authorized.

Object identity

How the authenticated digital item or claim is distinguished from other items.

Time and event metadata

Timestamp and any permitted contextual metadata connected to the authentication event.

PAR reference

The reference generated so the authentication can later be checked.

Status changes

How revocation, reporting, expiration or other status changes should be represented.

Limitations

Authentication proves the recorded event and evidence within scope; it should not be described as proving facts outside that scope.
